The Mystery of the Mask
An intergenerational art workshop for "Parents As Art Partners," a grant sponsored every year by the Center for Arts Education
Mott Hall II Middle School
27 adults and children participated at one stage or another.

Session or Day 1.

Getting to Know You
(and Your Sign!!)
Mandala

To set a tone of trust and community for what was to come we played a “painting” game the first night.

Around a 9’ canvas circle each participant made shapes, lines and dots as per the instructions. Every time the bell chimed everyone moved over one place with a new color to add to someone else’s creation.

In this way everyone had something to contribute to the whole endeavor. We had a blast!

Session 2.

We next met at the Metropolitan Museum of New York to explore the masks of past and current cultures.

What could we find here that would help us to create our own?

Patterns & Shapes

Ritual & Tradition

Session 3.
Casting the Mask Mold

Under protection of petroleum jelly and shower caps, parents and children paired up to make their plaster impressions.

Everyone participated.
We made 26 masks that night!

Session 4. Bringing Forth the Mask Character

Who might we be?

Like many a mask society or the Japanese Noh actor we gazed at the mask forms before us, “listening” for guidance.

Then through paint and collage the mystery of each mask slowly emerged.

Session 5.
Telling the Story

Final touches were made.

Candles lit and circles formed for our closing ritual of revelation and farewell.

Meet our masks.

They tell stories of time and place, adventure and protection, wisdom and vision.
